Here I am back down in Coffs Harbour on the NSW mid north coast. Yesterday we visited the lovely little township of Glenreagh

DSCF3250

The half hour drive took us through some beautiful countryside until we reached the little town.

Glenreagh the south western gateway to the Clarence Valley, is a half hour drive along the Orara Way from Grafton (in the north) and Coffs Harbour (to the south east), through the picturesque Orara Valley.

We went to the Golden Dog pub for a great lunch. This is the most popular place in the town and it soon showed as it was filling up by lunch time.

If you would rather stop for a picnic there is Shannon Park down near the river where  there are tables and seats and wood bbqs

After lunch we headed over to Nana Glen, Russel Crowe “country” where we stopped for coffee and dessert at the Idle Inn cafe.

We did also stop on the way to meet some of the locals.

The the final stop before heading back to Coffs was at the Two Tails winery where we sampled a few of the local wines. They make a wonderful selection including whites, red, bubbles and fortifieds. It was almost like being back in Italy.

This part of the mid north coast of NSW is just so picturesque and peaceful.

We spent 4 lovely days in Sant’Agnello which is on the Sorrento Peninsula. We arrived by taking the train from Termini in Rome to Sorrento and then caught a taxi to our B&B in Sant’Agnello. There is also a local bus running from Sorrento to Sant’Agnello.

Sant’Agnello is a commune in the province of Naples in the region of Campania and is about 25 km southeast of Naples

One of the many delightful shops

Sant’Agnello is a quieter (and possibly more economic) alternative to staying in the centre of Sorrento.

DSCF1760

In this enchanting village there are restaurants and bars around Piazza Sant’Agnello and near the coast, which has great views. Our first night here we walked to a restaurant on the coast overlooking the bay.  The meal was delicious and simple and the view amazing.

La Marinello Beach

It is certainly a delightful town for a quiet and peaceful holiday offering a vast range of accommodations.

It is easy walking in the historical centre with its beautiful gardens, panoramic views, old churches and of course its lemon groves.

There is a local bus which we caught a few times both day and night from Sant’Agnello to Sorrento.

We enjoyed daily swims at a local beach which we walked to – La Marinello beach.

There is also a train station linking Sant’Agnello to Sorrento.

Sant’Agnello is a really lovely place to stay particularly if you would like a break from the past pace and the crowds.

Alberobello – Puglia

During our road trip we spent a day in Alberobello  which  is a town in the province of Bari in the Italian region of Puglia.  We drove to Alberobello  by car from Bari which took us just under an hour. It was an easy and pleasant drive.

lyrs=m@216000000,highlight-0x1347b264abcdaa6f-0xdec45d1171885f51@1-style-maps&hl=en&src=app&x=2244&y=1538&z=12&s=Galile

Alberobello is famous for its fairytale like 14th century Trulli huts. It is actually known at the Capital of the Trulli.

DSCF1219 DSCF1220

The trullo is a fascinating architectural feature of this area of Puglia, a building with conical roof made without mortar.

DSCF1228 DSCF1237

Some of the trulli are now used for stores, restaurants, and lodging. Many are still inhabited by locals, who are very friendly to visitors.

DSCF1235 DSCF1226

Although it is a popular tourist town, it is mostly the Italians who visit this amazing place. It is not so easy to get to from the west coast which means most tourists do not make the effort to visit there.

DSCF1230 DSCF1224

On arrival we stopped for lunch at a typical agriturismo which had a set menu. Food was very good, including a huge variety of antipasto della casa, very fresh meat well cooked and house wine.

However once we arrived in the centre of town we realised that we could have eaten there. It was a wonderful town with many restaurants, bars and cafes which mostly cater to tourists but it is not too hard to find restaurants serving typical local meals.

DSCF1225 DSCF1221

There are great little shops in the trullis selling souvenirs of the trulli models.  Also, you can buy local goods such as cheese, sausage, spreads, cookies, wine grappa. Some give you small samples or sell you a full glass of wine for a couple of Euros.

DSCF1218 DSCF1239 DSCF1238 DSCF1233 DSCF1234

Alberobello’s attractions are all within walking distance so we wandered around for a few hours.

There is a good choice of accommodation including B&B’s, apartments and hotels ranging from about 30 euro per night.

PS Trullis is the plural version of Trullo.

Torre Pellice – Piedmont

Anothor place that we booked through monastery stays was Foresteria Valdese di Torre Pellice. Torre Pellice is the historical capital of the Waldensians (Valdese)  and  the centre of the Italian Protestant community. DSCF2229 Torre Pellice is a gorgeous town 45 kilometers southwest of Turino, in the region of Piedmont and nestled in the Italian Alps. DSCF2244 We took the train from Turino to Ponerolo and then caught the bus to Torre Pellice. We arrived during “siesta” time so we went to a little local bar close by for a prosecco or 2 and waited for the accommodation to re open.  It was a really nice way to relax after a big day of travelling.

Once we checked  in to this delightful accommodation, we went out to explore the town. DSCF2243 DSCF2223 DSCF2222 We quickly discovered that the only language spoken here was Italian. To be expected. We used our limited Italian and found the more that we tried to speak in their language the more they tried to help us. Everyone made us feel so welcome and were so friendly. Even the dogs were friendly to us. DSCF2220 My room here was large with windows that opened out to the most spectacular view. I felt like singing “The  hills are alive with the Sound of Music” DSCF2224 DSCF2216 DSCF2217 The breakfast that was included in the rate was excellent. Dinner was also available for a small price. We did in fact have dinner here twice. Mostly because it was so very cold that it was easier to stay in rather than walking in the cold.  The 3 course meals for dinner where wholesome and delicious and cost 7 euro. We also had free internet access during our stay here.

DSCF2226

It was very cold even during the days.  My winter coats from Australia were not warm enough. Luckily while we were there the weekly market day was on so I purchased from one of the market stalls a lovely hooded jacket with faux fur trim.  This jacket which looks stunning was so inexpensive . I also purchased knitted gloves and scarf for very little. I walked away with a lovely warm, very warm. outfit,  I was delighted as it is not the sort of thing I would expect to buy at markets. As with most street markets in Italy the atmosphere was great and everyone was so friendly. DSCF2234 DSCF2231 DSCF2232 DSCF2233 In Torre Pellice, there are many cafes, bars and restaurants. Eating out was very affordable with excellent choices. The atmosphere was charming particularly in the evenings. Torre Pellice is probably out of the way for most of us, but, if you ever have the opportunity to visit, I can highly recommend it. It is delightful.  It is quite close to both France and Switzerland. We met folks from both these countries where we stayed who visit Torre Pellice often for bush/mountain walking. The Foresteria is very reasonably priced so they visit this area often.
