During our road trip we spent a day in Alberobello which is a town in the province of Bari in the Italian region of Puglia. We drove to Alberobello by car from Bari which took us just under an hour. It was an easy and pleasant drive.
Alberobello is famous for its fairytale like 14th century Trulli huts. It is actually known at the Capital of the Trulli.
The trullo is a fascinating architectural feature of this area of Puglia, a building with conical roof made without mortar.
Some of the trulli are now used for stores, restaurants, and lodging. Many are still inhabited by locals, who are very friendly to visitors.
Although it is a popular tourist town, it is mostly the Italians who visit this amazing place. It is not so easy to get to from the west coast which means most tourists do not make the effort to visit there.
On arrival we stopped for lunch at a typical agriturismo which had a set menu. Food was very good, including a huge variety of antipasto della casa, very fresh meat well cooked and house wine.
However once we arrived in the centre of town we realised that we could have eaten there. It was a wonderful town with many restaurants, bars and cafes which mostly cater to tourists but it is not too hard to find restaurants serving typical local meals.
There are great little shops in the trullis selling souvenirs of the trulli models. Also, you can buy local goods such as cheese, sausage, spreads, cookies, wine grappa. Some give you small samples or sell you a full glass of wine for a couple of Euros.
Alberobello’s attractions are all within walking distance so we wandered around for a few hours.
There is a good choice of accommodation including B&B’s, apartments and hotels ranging from about 30 euro per night.
PS Trullis is the plural version of Trullo.
How lovely! I’ve never been to Albarello but have heard so much about this area. I go to the Women’s Fiction Festival in Matera each year which is in Basilicata rather than Puglia. The old town is where they filmed Mel Gibson’s The Passion of Christ and it is quite astonishing. A great part of Italy!
Hi Catherine
you have also been to many beautiful places in Italy. Alberobello is very special
Alberobello is a stunning place. We loved it too.
It is different and very special
Great photos once again. Jd.
Thanx JD
It looks and sounds wonderful, I hope to be able to visit one day.
You will enjoy it Donna
What an absolutely gorgeous place…Kay
Yes Kay it is and so unique
Very interesting architecture. Amazing how centuries ago people could make a roof like that that holds together for hundreds of years without even mortar, and these days with all our technology we need to replace our average roof in 20 or 30 years.
Very interesting comment. Yes why is that so. Maybe there is some maintenance thru the years Mind you, look at Italy’s architecture from hundreds of years ago compared to modern day architecture Lyn
never been to Puglia, and always thought those trulli were fascinating building, many of them have been converted into homes or holiday homes and they look gorgeous (ps spelling of Puglia in your title is incorrect)
Yes they are fascinating and very unique. Thank you for letting me know of the typo Lyn
I have been telling everyone that I want to go back to Italy.. I would love to see these buildings! They’re a photographer’s dream.. and you’ve taken incredible photos! Love these! xx
Hi Barbara. It is a touristy place but it is not over run by tourists like Rome etc. So it is much easier to take photos
Great photos!I really want to explore Puglia.
It is an easy place to explore as it is not over run by tourists which also keeps the prices down Lyn
Lyn, i’m convinced this it a place I want to visit. Your photos a so alive and charming!
I can highly recommend Alberobello. One of the nicest things about it is – it is not so very busy with tourists like the west coast. It is unique and fabulously interesting and not so costly Lyn Thanks for stopping by my blog
That in itself is a great attraction. I especially enjoy getting off the beaten path. I’m looking forward to a wonderful discovery!
Me too. I am happier in the regional areas. I have rented an apt in Bagni di lucca for a month in May. I am so excited. If you are in the area drop by
I would love to, but doubt I would make it by then. Thinking September/October. Lucky you!! Sounds like heaven…
This ‘Trulli’ is a unique place & less than an hour from my home!
Hope you don’t mind me saying… The plural of trullo is trulli (without the ‘s’). ;)
Wonderful place where to relax and eat a good food too :)
It is especially lovely as it has not been discovered by too many tourists. Thanks for stopping by my blog.
Yeah that’s true , me I’m from Bari and if we could just have more tourism in Puglia it would be a benefit for flourish again the economy. It’s really good to promote the tourism there because is such as beautiful place but no many people know about that. “Polignano a Mare” example is an amazing place to visit.
So true. Tourism is what keeps many parts of Italy alive. Great for the economy. Just tough at times for the locals
