Efate, island, Port Vila. Havannah Harbour, tropics, Vanuatu

Hello from Vanuatu
I flew into the capital of Vanuatu, Port Vila from Australia. It is about a 2 3/4 hour flight out from my home town of Brisbane.  Port Vila which is on the main island of Efate is the largest city.  Vanuatu is some 1,750 kilometres (1,090 miles) east of northern  Australia.

Vanuatu is an island archipelago consisting of approximately 82 relatively small islands.

The official languages are Bislama, French and English. The currency is Vanuatu Vatu.

Nh-map

We are staying at a lovely house on Paradise Bay at Havannah Harbour. There is no power in the area so the electricity is created by a generator here at the house which is powered by solar. There is no tv, the water is bore water and cooking is with gas.

Looking down from the house

It is so naturally lovely and so very peaceful.

My first day of exploring was driving part way around this island. Our first stop was at the Havannah resort for coffee.

Then we continued to drive through and stop at lovely little local villages along the way. About 80% of the locals live in the rural areas in small villages of about 50 people.

DSCF3335

The locals or NiVan are always walking, probably they are not able to afford cars. As you drive by, they always wave and we always respond. It is the custom to always wave and say hello.

We stopped at several road side markets and stalls.

DSCF3323 DSCF3324 DSCF3322

Although it is a very poor country the people seem to be so happy and just so friendly.

DSCF3331 DSCF3328

We stopped for lunch at the Beach Comber Resort. It is anything but a resort, however it was an experience. It has hot springs inside the “restaurant” and there was a band playing, very humble but delightful. It started to rain so the band came inside.

DSCF3345 DSCF3342 DSCF3343 DSCF3344

We stopped to take photos often. It sure is a photographer’s dream location. The vegetation is so lush and tropical, the road side stalls so colourful, the signs so interesting and it is beautiful.

DSCF3326

DSCF3327

It was church day in Vanuatu so there were “services” everywhere we went.

We were always made so welcome as we drove slowly by or walked past. The services are not always in a church.

To the locals, their children, their land and their pigs are special.

Life in Vanuatu moves at a gentle pace. It offers a carefree lifestyle and excellent tourist facilities. There is just so much to see and do here.

Naples, Pompeii, Ruins, Vesuvius

Pompeii is near Naples in the Italian region of Campania,  in the  commune of Pompeii.

pompeii

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

I have visited the ruins of Pompeii a few times.

Each time I have visited Pompeii it has been a very hot day.  The day we were there in June it was 40 degrees Celsius.  It is important to wear comfortable walking shoes, wear a hat, sun screen and carry water.  It is a hard walk up to the ruins from the car park so it would be best if you are reasonably fit to do this walk.  If you have time, allow several  hours to spend here taking in the sights as there is so much to see.

??????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

We walked through ruins of brothels and viewed original mosaic tiled floors. It was interesting to see how many “modern day” facilities they had including sliding doors which were evident from the grooves in the stone floors, a sophisticated running water system through lead pipes, an amphitheatre  and a gymnasium.

??????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Pompeii was destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m of ash and pumice  in the  eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

??????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Pompeii has been a tourist destination for over 250 years and is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy, with approximately 2.5 million visitors every year

Pompeii is situated on a plateau of Vesuvian lava and overlooks the Sarno  River valley

While we were renting the house in Pievebogliana, we visited the little town of Muccia many times.

muccia

From Wikipedia

Muccia is a municipal in the Province of Macerata in the region of Marche , located about 70 km southwest of Ancona and about 40 km southwest of Macerata and only about 7 km from Camerino.

muccia map 2

In the small central piazza there is an excellent restaurant with a menu specializing in many of the local produce including porcini mushrooms, truffles and game, including Cinghiale (wild boar), venison, partridge, pheasant and woodcock. They are cooked, using recipes from the local area – the food is simple and authentic.

We also met with friends a few times at a little bar, I Giardini.
Muccia is a small, sleepy town with lovely ancient buildings. There are a few hotels and B&B’s in the Muccia area if you ever feel like a peaceful break.

We stayed in the area close by for a month and were never short of things to do. Of course you do need your own transport. We drove to Camerino, Macerata, Castelraimondo, Madelena and other small towns in the area often.

Catacombe di San Domitilla – Rome

While staying in Rome we took the bus to the Catacombs on the Appia Way. (Via Appia)

map of catacombs

We took the # 714 bus which took about 20 minutes and then we had about a 15 minute walk to the catacombs.

DSCF2411

Catacombs are underground burial chambers.

There are sixty known subterranean burial chambers in Rome. We visited the Catacombe di San Domitilla which are spread over 15 kilometers of underground caves.

DSCF2410

The Domitilla Catacombs are unique in that they are the oldest of Rome’s underground burial networks. They are the best preserved and one of the most extensive and, the only ones to still contain bones.

They are the only catacombs that have a subterranean basilica; entrance to the catacombs is achieved through this sunken 4th-century church

DSCF2409 DSCF2408

The entry fee was 8€ for adults and 5€ for children, and included a guided tour of the catacombs which lasted about 30 mins.  I found it to be fairly easy walking, although the passage ways are very narrow, and there are steps. It  was quite an experience, to have a glimpse at the life (and death) of the early Christians, their burial rites and their first trials at religious art

They are open from 9 – 12 and then 2pm – 5 each day. However are closed on Tuesdays.

DSCF2407

If you are interested in Roman/early Christian history this is worth a trip.

Norcia – Umbria

Each time I have been to the Mont Sibillini we have spent a day in the lovely town of Norcia.

DSCF2148

Norcia, is a town in the province of Perugia in southeastern Umbria.

data=VLHX1wd2Cgu8wR6jwyh-km8JBWAkEzU4,vqq1toL441adhvI_FvVIea4_oTtK28_JFARp-2S4Y2SHNAqXPLZHxQ6wQmw_lnM9ysYhmxM0Pc5sXw07_0mLQRa4BCOG3vwBiIh1VZNbgDeBx8BRbOja8yOzC4d87MqGCGB5jmUldGPJLM851eQ6xu8HJrJHt2B4FO

The area is known for its mountaineering and hiking. It is also widely known for hunting, especially of the wild boar (cinghiale), and for sausages and ham made from wild boar and pork. There are many shops in Norcia selling these local products which also include apples, honey, truffles, mushrooms, chestnuts, chickpeas and  vin cotto or cooked wine.

DSCF2146 DSCF2143 DSCF1950 ???????????????

There are several ways of travelling to Norcia. We went by car the last time I was there – a beautiful drive up.  When we were in school in  Castelraimondo we travelled by coach.  If travelling by train you can arrive at Ascoli Piceno, Spoleto, and Camerino and then take the bus up

DSCF2149

Each time I have been to Norcia has been in Autumn which is just so lovely.  I am sure Summer and spring would be great.  Winter is very cold and snowy which is a great attraction to cross-country skiers and other winter sport enthusiasts.

DSCF2152 DSCF2151 DSCF2150

The area offers many different sports including mountain biking, horseback riding, hang gliding, paragliding, and climbing.

For me I am happy to stick to the town streets and enjoy the artistic, cultural, culinary, and historic traditions that have arisen and endured here over the centuries. There is a very good choice of restaurants and cafes offering  the local cuisine.

DSCF1957 DSCF2145

The last time I visited there was one of their many festivals in the main piazza.

DSCF1956 DSCF1955 DSCF1954

From Norcia we then travelled to Castellucio.

DSCF2153

I look forward to my next trip to Norcia which I will plan for spring/summer to see the flowers especially the poppies.
