The Barossa valley is one of Australia’s top wine making regions.

The Barossa is about 60 k’s North east from Adelaide. It is a beautiful drive up through the hills and in to the valleys with its many vineyards. It is famed for its European heritage and its legendary wines and is the wine capital of Australia.

The Barossa valley apparently has the oldest grape vines in the world which originally were brought to Australia from France.

Wine isn’t all that tastes great in the Barossa. The Barossa is also known for its food and history. The secret ingredient is the dirt. The fertile soil of the Barossa is home to some of the world’s most lauded vineyards

While there we visited Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop which offers tastings of local seasonal produce which you can purchase. Maggie is one of Australia’s most loved cooks. You can purchase one of Maggie’s signed books, have a light lunch or simply sit back and take in the view.

I doubt very much that you will be able to leave the area without some of the very nice local wines or in fact some of the locally made jams, preserves, sauces etc

Just be careful not to leave your bottles of wine in your hot cars.

The Barossa has the perfect climate suited for its reds but having said that, I drink white wine and my favourite Australian wine comes from the Barossa.

Another lovely spot is the Whispering Wall where we stopped for a picnic morning tea. The  Whispering Wall  needs to be seen (or heard) to be believed. The retaining wall of the Barossa Reservoir is curved in just the right way, so if you whisper at one end you’ll be heard clearly at the other, more than 100 metres away.

The Barossa is a great romantic escape offering many different types of accommodation. You could easily spend several days in this gorgeous region exploring the hundreds of wineries, tasting the local wines, visiting the art galleries or enjoying amazing meals in any of the many restaurants and cafes.
