Yesterday we drove down to the coast to the town of Viareggio.  It was an easy drive through Lucca and then on to the autostrade A11 to the coast. It only took us an hour to get there.

Viareggio is a city and commune in northern Tuscany on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea and is the second largest city after Lucca in the province of Lucca. Viareggio began as a medieval fishing village, then later gained renown for its shipbuilding. In the mid-19th century, the town was developed as a seaside resort, which it’s been ever since. Today, the city is loved for its long beaches, pine woods, great shopping and lively nightlife. We arrived to the most magnificent weather and everything looked wonderful. I must say though, for us Aussies, it is so different to our beaches and resorts back home. You could see that everything was being set up and prepared for summer which is just around the corner. There was not much open so we walked around and explored. We eventually found a restaurant open and stopped for our morning coffee. The restaurant was owned by a delightful mother and daughter. The décor inside was stunning.

After our coffee we just walked and walked along the very long promenade. It is a very wide promenade ideal for bike riding, dog walking or just walking.  Along the way we passed many beautiful hotels.

We eventually came to the marina end of the town which was like being in another world. It is a hive of activity with many shops, restaurants, cafes and people

The marina was full of boats. Some of them so big I cannot imagine how they would get them out. DSCF5548 DSCF5545 DSCF5540 There are many huge ship building companies with many beautiful boats. We wandered around the marina looking at these gorgeous boats and of course taking photos.

We found a restaurant near the marina on the resort side of the canal for lunch but would suggest restaurants further down the promenade towards the resorts. The lunch was OK but very touristy and presented on plastic plates.

From San Cassiano we took the bus further up the  mountain to the little village of Montefegatesi.

DSCF4953

The bus ride was a lot of fun but for some it could be quite scary. The roads are very narrow, steep and have no guard rails and our driver thought he was driving in a grand prix.  It is a sheer drop looking out of the bus windows and down. But. Gorgeous scenery all the way up.

DSCF5018

When we arrived in this lovely little village we realised it was siesta time as everything was closed and there was no one around.

Except for the dogs.

As we quietly wandered  around exploring and taking photos we were greeted by dogs with very loud voices. Maybe their owners were not too happy with the barking.

We ran in to an Aussie lady, Mauricia and her dog Deane who we had met on the bus a few days earlier. Yes, dogs ride the buses also here. They can go almost anywhere here.  Mauricia has been living in the area for 8 years so showed us around Montefegatesi.

Bagni di Lucca, Montefegatesi, San Cassiano

Saturday was another magnificent day. We started off by walking up to the next village, La Villa.          We had no fixed plans and were open to suggestions so we popped in to the tourist information office, which is only open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am till 1pm. We soon learned that even though we were open to any ideas we were very restricted as we were on foot and the buses were  not running after about 9.30am till about 1.30pm.

As luck would have it, there was a man in the office using the internet who overheard our conversation, and, spoke English, who offered to give us a ride up to San Cassiano, which is up the mountain from here. From there we worked out that we could then take a bus at 2pm up to Montefegatesi.

So, we accepted the ride with this very nice man who not only drove us to San Cassiano, but he also walked us around the village to show us where everything is. All  within about 100 metres. The museum and the church were both closed up so he made a phone call and a man came to open up and show us around.

We told our kind man, that after we looked around we would  like to have lunch before heading up to Montefegatesi so he informed the local bar owner and booked us in for lunch. This is nothing like making a normal lunch  reservatiionn, this  is about letting the local bar owner know that 2 people would like lunch cooked for them.

We walked around the village and the surrounding paths. The village is surrounded by green hills and mountains and of course magnificent vistas.

DSCF4939

We then went in to the museum which is only very small but very old. The wooden carving of the boy on the horse is about 800 years old.

DSCF4922

Once again, it was our lucky day. There were 3 people in the museum also who were  taking professional photos of unusual things. One of these men from Milano spoke English and happily translated what the curator had to say.

DSCF4938
DSCF4921

From here we went in to the old church which dates back to the 8th century. We were captivated for quite some time as there are many unusual carvings in the stone which reminded me of aliens, very interesting and different. Once again, our new friend from Milano explained everything in English to us.

From the church, after saying good-bye to our new Milano friends we headed up to the bar for lunch. As with most of these type of places in these sleepy little villages, the meal is whatever is on the menu for the day. So we sat back with our glass of wine and waited while some delicious meals were cooked and brought out to us. The food was local, fresh and wonderful. 4 Courses and a carafe of wine later we left to take the 2pm bus (which came at 1.40) up to Montefegatesi.

Yesterday we had the absolute pleasure of being taken to Casa Debbio.

Debra who lives in Bagni di Lucca and Brisbane is the owner of this magnificent stone house.  She invited us to go with her yesterday afternoon up into the mountains to the house.

We stopped on the way to look at and photograph the stunning views.

It did not take us long to learn that one of the best markets in this area is held on a Thursday in the picturesque village of Castelnuovo Garfagnano.

DSCF4880

So yesterday morning we headed out early to this gorgeous part of the world.  It is only a few minutes bus ride from our village Ponte a Serraglio down to the train station where we took the 25 minute train ride up to Castelnuovo Garfagnano.

From the train station it was a short 10 minute walk to the centre of town where the market stalls were.

It was magnificent scenery along the way.

We explored for several hours and were not able to resist buying from several of the fabulous stalls.

I could not help myself from visiting this gorgeous shop along the way.

DSCF4860
DSCF4859

The weather was perfect, the atmosphere was super and there was a  variety of things to buy, including, clothes, handbags, shoes, children’s clothing,  women and men’s clothing, kitchen ware, wonderful linen and manchester and so much more.

DSCF4862

The town is such a pretty town with lots of lovely shops and of course history

After several hours it was time for us to refuel so we stopped at a little café for a bite to eat. One of the specials of the day was roast beef with roasted vegetable, delicious, and washed down with a cold white wine. Great lunch.

Then it was time to head back to the train station and return to our little village in Bagni di Lucca.

This is one of the many advantages of staying in one area for an extended period of time. We have the time to really live and experience the local way of life.

Campo de Fiori – Rome

I always love the markets in Italy and today at Campo de Fiori is no exception. As I sit here sipping my cappuccino,  I watch the excitement of the vendors and the people looking and buying.  It is such an interesting exciting atmosphere and just so entertaining. I wonder why this market has such a great feel. Is it the “Buon Giorno and Ciao” constantly being called out by the locals to their friends and colleagues? Maybe. Whatever it is, it feels fabulous.

DSCF4592

Campo dei Fiori (field of flowers) is a lovely, cute, adorable square, not too big and not too small.

DSCF4545

We have an apartment very close to these markets. We can wander up for coffee, lunch or dinner. No matter what time we are there, it is full of activity and is exciting. I could easily say that it is one of my favourite parts of Rome. Thank you Donna for introducing me to this wonderful Piazza.

DSCF4536

Amid the hustle and bustle of this busy city, this is a welcome respite

Fodor’s guide tells us that this Piazza has had an outdoor market since 1869 and that the square was the site of public executions during the Inquisition. The fellow memorialized by the central statute [Giordano Bruno – a philosopher] was burned at the stake here in 1600. . The marketplace is open in the mornings Monday through Saturday. Amazingly they set this up every morning and take it down every afternoon

DSCF4534

It offers beautiful flowers; a pleasant fountain to sit on the rim of; the statue of Bruno, and of course numerous stalls selling pasta, olive oils, dried mushrooms and dried fruits, limoncello and spices, clothes and of course beautiful fresh produce.

DSCF4600 DSCF4606 DSCF4607 DSCF4609 DSCF4610 DSCF4612 DSCF4614

Numerous cafes and restaurants are located here including Forno’s which is famous for its pizza and pastries.

DSCF4548

Campo de Fiori is only a short walk from the Piazza Navona, or you can cross the Tiber River walking bridge and go over to Trastevere. Do not miss the area; it is locals and we enjoyed every single minute here!!

DSCF4543 DSCF4544

Campo de Fiori is a perfect central location within walking distance of major sites, as well as many excellent cafes and restaurants,. It is so fun people watching day and night.

We flew in this morning from Australia. We arrived early and were picked up by our driver who brought us to our apt here in Via dei Banchi Vecchi near the Piazza Navonna.

DSCF4586

The reason we chose this particular apartment is for its great location. We are only 5 minutes walk to Campo de Fiori, less than 10 mins walk to Piazza Navonna, 20 minutes to the Vatican City, Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.

After a cuppa, showers and a chat we headed off on foot to explore our neighbourhood

The weather was absolutely perfect. It was a clear blue sky on a summer’s day. We were prepared for cold weather so we were very pleasantly surprised with the lovely weather.

We wandered through gorgeous little cobble stone streets and past many adorable little shops.

DSCF4528

First stop, Campo de Fiori.

We stopped at a fabulous restaurant at the Campo de Fiori Piazza and had our first meal and glass of wine in Italy. Pizza. Yum. No one makes pizza like the Italians.

DSCF4557

We sat at our outside table and people watched, which is one of my favourite pastimes, particularly in Italy. Of course it is easy to identify the locals and the tourists.

We explored the wonderful Campo de Fiori markets and took lots of photos. We bought fresh produce to make a salad for dinner. We knew that we would be too tired to go out to dinner.

DSCF4545

In our neighbourhood, there are so many interesting little shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and bakeries.

Right next door to our apartment building is a gelataria which makes me happy. This is just one of my many weaknesses when I am in Italy.

There is so much more to see and do in this fabulous city – tomorrow is another day
