If you have been to Cinque Terre, you will know there are hundreds of places to eat. These include, bars/café, pizzeria, gelateria, restaurants and more.

While we were staying in Porto Venere we took the boat to Monterosso and later headed off to Vernazza for lunch.

When we arrived,  the restaurant Belforte, which is high up on the rocks, caught our eye so we climbed the stairs to ask if there was a table available for us to have lunch there. Our timing was perfect as we were immediately seated at a table with a great view.  Mind you, there are even better positioned tables than the one we had but we were very happy.

This was one of our best meals in Cinque Terre for so many reasons.

Firstly, the atmosphere, the view, the breeze, the ambiance.

Secondly, the food. The menu is not over-priced and offers many great options for both food and beverage.

Finally, the service. The staff are amazing, friendly, helpful, and do not rush you. They want you to stay, enjoy your wine…and possibly order more!

We all ordered the fresh bream, which was actually “plated-up” right at our table. And it was perfect. Our meal was just like the view, fantastic.

This was simply an amazing experience to eat a meal while sitting right on top of the sea and waves.

If you think about dining at this restaurant I would recommend that you make a booking and request a table on one of the small terraces overlooking the Ligurian Sea.

The view from this restaurant cannot be effectively described. You just have to see it to believe it.  It is magical.

Workman’s Lunch at Fornoli

Fornoli is the next village down from where we were staying in Ponte a Serraglio.  It is about 2 kilometres and only takes a couple of minutes to drive. Fornoli has a bigger central area than Ponte a Serraglio with several bars, shops and restaurants etc plus a good size supermarket. So this is where we mainly went to shop especially when we had a car.

20120513-011339

However, the first time we went to do the shopping we took the bus down. After we finished our shopping we walked out to the bus stop, loaded up with several bags of groceries to wait for the bus. After quite some time we learned that the bus would not be by for another few hours. So we went in to the bar to ask them to phone for a cab for us only to find out that there are no cabs in this village. So what was a next option? Yes, you guessed it. We had to thumb a ride. After several attempts a nice man stopped and we squeezed ourselves and our groceries in to his tiny little car. Phew, we were so grateful for his ride. The nice man, who only spoke Italian, dropped us safely to our village Ponte a Serraglio. Even though it was only a short walk, about 2 k’s, it was too far to walk loaded with groceries. We learned after this episode that the buses mainly run in the mornings and afternoons to accommodate the school kids and also people travelling to work. There are plenty of these buses morning and afternoon but not many during the middle part of the day.

While we were there we saw a sign out the front of one of the lovely bars in Fornoli,  La Ruota, the sign, “Pranzo di Lavoro € 10”.  A few days later in our new little rental car we drove back down to Fornoli to go to La Ruota for a Workman’s Lunch

20140527_143422

The actual restaurant is above the bar of the same name, around the side and up some stairs. Up we went and arrived at an empty restaurant but were greeted so nicely and shown to our table by the window.

DSCF5242 DSCF5240

After receiving the menu and having it explained to us more customers started to arrive. And arrive they did. They were mostly single customers and mostly men. It was a very popular restaurant and rightly so. The food was great and the price very good.

La Ruota Ristorante

For €11 we had a delicious 3 course home cooked meal including ½ litre of wine and also water was included. In Italy there usually is a charge for water.

And, the service was excellent. If you are ever in Fornoli, give it a try. I can highly recommend this lunch

During our 4 week stay in Bagni di Lucca we enjoyed a Pranzo di Lavoro at La Ruota a couple of times. The menu changes daily, the meals are cooked using the local produce and they are so delicious.

Since discovering La Ruota, we saw several restaurants with a sign out the front advertising Pranzo di Lavoro when we drove around in our little Fiat.  It is a great way for the restaurant owner to get business and it is a good deal for the diner. We did try others but La Ruota was by far our favourite.

Within about a 10 minute walk from our hotel,  La Fontana Hotel in Stresa, is the Stresa- Mottarone Cable car.  We headed off on foot just after breakfast to take the 9.30 cable car which departs from the Piazzale Lido Station and goes up the side of Mount Mottrarone.  The ride took about 20 minutes each way and gave us a fabulous bird’s-eye view of Lake Maggiore, the Borromean Islands, the Po Valley, and the Alps

Once we reached the station at the top, we then took the chair lift up to the 4,895-foot summit.

DSCF6512

The cable car runs every 20 minutes everyday during the summer from 09.30 to 17.40  with an hour break for lunch.

The cable car ride is about 20 minutes followed by a chair lift to the top of the mountain however you can walk from the cable car station at the top to the summit which will take another 15 minutes. If you are fit, you can walk all the way and if you miss the last cable car for the day you will need to walk back down.

The views in June were spectacularly clear with all the lakes visible from that height. Snow was still on the high alps. The towns in the valley are also clearly visible. What a vista!

The cable car has a mid station at Alpino where you can alight and take a mainly flat pleasant walk to visit the Alpine Gardens. Once again, the scenery along the way is gorgeous.  The gardens cover an area of approximately 40,000m2  with wonderful panoramic views.  The Alpine gardens are well worth a visit They were a welcome break for us.

The Alpine Gardens are 300m from the Alpino mid-way station and are open everyday April to October.  Adults costs € 4 and children 4-12 years cost € 3.

panorama

After spending a delightful hour or so in the gardens we then found a great little restaurant close to the cable car station and enjoyed some lovely local cooking.

If you love nature, walking and enjoy beautiful views, or you are just looking to relax, take a trip up the mountain in the cable car.

Barga – another gorgeous hilltop town

Just 30 minutes drive from Bagni di Lucca is this amazing little hilltop town. Many times when we were waiting for a bus in Lucca to return to the apartment in Ponte a Serraglio we saw buses going to Barga.  We were curious about this place so one afternoon after a lovely lunch at one of our favourite pizza restaurants near Ponte Diavalo we decided to drive up to Barga.  Well, that was yet again another fabulous decision.

panorama

This was another WOW day in Tuscany. What is it about this country that around every corner there is another view to take your breath away.  We were like Alice in Wonderland, we just could not get enough of this stunning town nor could I stop taking photos.

Barga is a medieval town in the province of Lucca in Tuscany. It is a small hilltown, north of Lucca, in the valley known as the “Garfagnana”.

data=VLHX1wd2Cgu8wR6jwyh-km8JBWAkEzU4,fiN_fO9MRNxCCTebSN38yYupQsp0pr5kT0-lV05y1YgF33XYbNd4C4es0O0nQUgUT2hHHNESAU641iD_ieIPX7_ihBdm6Y9j_ViPpWLUS6RTKmH6tBcaLvTqVt

We wandered around for hours. We arrived not long after lunch so it was no doubt siesta time so the entire town was very quiet.  Although,  there were several places to have a coffee or a glass of wine or in fact a meal.

Of course also, there was the gelateria for our daily dose of gelato.

You don’t need a car in Barga (in fact cars are a nuisance in a Tuscan hilltown!) as public transport is generally excellent and reliable. It is easy to get to from Pisa and Lucca by bus or by train (but note that the train station is 5km from the town so the bus is better). We did drive up in our car and parked it just outside the entry gates. It was easy to go everywhere in the town by foot.
