Just 30 minutes drive from Bagni di Lucca is this amazing little hilltop town. Many times when we were waiting for a bus in Lucca to return to the apartment in Ponte a Serraglio we saw buses going to Barga. We were curious about this place so one afternoon after a lovely lunch at one of our favourite pizza restaurants near Ponte Diavalo we decided to drive up to Barga. Well, that was yet again another fabulous decision.
This was another WOW day in Tuscany. What is it about this country that around every corner there is another view to take your breath away. We were like Alice in Wonderland, we just could not get enough of this stunning town nor could I stop taking photos.
Barga is a medieval town in the province of Lucca in Tuscany. It is a small hilltown, north of Lucca, in the valley known as the “Garfagnana”.
We wandered around for hours. We arrived not long after lunch so it was no doubt siesta time so the entire town was very quiet. Although, there were several places to have a coffee or a glass of wine or in fact a meal.
Of course also, there was the gelateria for our daily dose of gelato.
You don’t need a car in Barga (in fact cars are a nuisance in a Tuscan hilltown!) as public transport is generally excellent and reliable. It is easy to get to from Pisa and Lucca by bus or by train (but note that the train station is 5km from the town so the bus is better). We did drive up in our car and parked it just outside the entry gates. It was easy to go everywhere in the town by foot.
I visited Barga a few years ago, I absolutely loved the fact that some of the locals there would start speaking and a scottish accent would come out… I hadn’t done my research beforehand so it was very unexpected! Beautiful place too, as with the rest of Italy!
Thanx Nicole, yes it is a lovely little town. We did not see many locals except for a few shop owners who were soooo friendly. We loved it there.
What a beautiful little town. Your wonderful blogs are filling up my bucket list fast.
Will need to win lotto to get it completed. Thanks again for fantastic pics. x
Thanks Donna. We both know that you would love it x

Another glorious post. Have you ever considered putting together an APP for travelers? You have presented so much wonderful information.
Thank you Adri for your very generous comment. What is APP

Hi Lyn, APP is short for “Application” – a feature that people can purchase and use with their iPhones or other types of phones. There are APPS for everything from cooking to where to eat in various cities, to exercise – you name it, there is an APP for it. The ones for travel might include places to eat, or places to stay, side trips to take, etc. I have seen APPS by some cooking teachers, a few by Americna expats who now live in Italy and make their livings taking people on tours. Google “APP”, and you will get a sense of what it is all about. I so enjoy your site!
Thanks so much Adri. I do know what an app is but had not made the connection. I would love to create an app. Certainly not something I had ever thought of.
We loved visiting Barga…plus, that gelato was some of the best we had. It is a quite mysterious little place to visit. Beatiful views abound.
Yes another lovely surprise. Thanks for reading my blog Lyn
