When we think of Italian hill towns, we often think of those in Tuscany and Umbria but there are great hill towns to visit all over Italy. They usually have a medieval centre and may have walls enclosing the historic centre or a castle at the top. They are also good places to go for a view of the surrounding countryside.

Here are some of the Italian hill towns they I have visited.

San Gimignano, Tuscany

San Gimignano  is a small walled village southwest of Florence and probably one of Italy’s most well known hill towns. It is famous for its fascinating medieval architecture and towers that rise above of all the other buildings offering an impressive view of the city from the surrounding valley.
At the height of its glory, San Gimignano’s patrician families had built around 72 tower-houses as symbols of their wealth and power, of which only 14 have survived

Siena, Tuscany

Siena, in the heart of Tuscany, is a good example of a classic hill town but it’s larger than many of the others. The town is famous for its Palio, a horse race run around the town’s fan-shaped main square, il Campo.

Assisi, Umbria

Assisi is a town on the western flank of Monte Subasio. Best known as the birthplace of St. Francis, Italy’s patron saint, Assisi lies amid Umbria’s rolling hills.  If you are staying in Rome, Assisi is only a day trip away. Folks have travelled here for centuries to visit the Basilica of San Francesco (where St. Francis is buried) and the Basilica of Santa Chiara (to see the tomb of St. Clare). Shopping here is a delight with many things to look out for, as the Umbrian region is known for a variety of different products. Including, Olive Oil, Wine, Truffles, Linens and embroidery .

Norcia , Umbria

Norcia is a charming town in the high country of  Umbria. It is  is probably most famous in modern times for its pork products. Norcia is well worth a visit for additional reasons – its mountain air and broad streets make for a pleasurable excursion. Norcia is surrounded by the Sybilline mountains and is completely enclosed by a full circuit of walls. Norcia, which is quite small, is an easy and relaxing town for a stroll around.

Norcia (1)Norcia (2)

Gubbio, Umbria

Gubbio is a town located in the region of Umbria. Peacefully set on the slopes of Monte Ingino, Gubbio is known for its medieval palaces, churches and cathedrals.

Gubbio

Camerino, Le Marche

Camerino is a town in central-eastern Italy le Marche. It is located in the Apennines. Camerino, poised on a ridge between two river valleys is home to the University of Camerino which was founded in the Middle Ages. While spending extended periods of time in Le Marche ,this small but impressive hill town was one of our favourites that we visited many times.

Urbino, le Marche

Urbino is a Renaissance hill town with an impressive  Ducal Palace that houses one of Italy’s top collections of Renaissance paintings in 80 of the palace’s renovated rooms. Urbino’s university dates from 1506 and the town, nestled on a high sloping hillside, retains much of its picturesque medieval aspect.

While we were attending the school in Castelraimondo, we cut class on Wednesdays to go to the markets in Macerata.  First thing Wednesday morning we would walk into the town and take the train to Macerata. The train ride takes about an hour, then from the train station in Macerata we walked up the hill to the markets. It is quite a tough climb up the hill to the centre and to the markets.  You may find it easier to take a taxi.

mappa province of macerata

When we were renting the house in Pievebogliana we drove our rental car to Macerata which took about 40 minutes.  We found parking to be quite easy although it was a bit of a walk to the markets. Macerta is about 30 k’s from the Adriatic coast.

These street markets are one of the largest markets that I have been to in Italy, and I have been to many.  They fill up many up the streets which are terraced up the centre of the town to the top with stalls and punters . You  can easily make it a  full day outing.  Here in these markets or street fairs you will find antiques, bric-a-brac, the not-so-old stuff that’s known in Italy as modernariato, and leatherwear, shoes, clothing and handbags, and of course many of the vendors selling lots of delicious foods.

??????????? ??????????? ???????????

Late morning, we always stopped for coffee and cornetto at the top of the markets in a little café where we could relax, drink our coffee, look at our purchases and check our emails using the free WIFI.

???????????

Later in the day we would choose another café or restaurant for a local lunch.

??????????? ???????????

Macerata is a little-known provincial capital surrounded by Marche’s loveliest countryside. Its ancient university was founded in 1290 and has about 13,000 students. There is also an art school.

Castleraimondo and Roma 125

And if you’re the slightest bit interested in contemporary art, Macerata has a gallery that alone is reason enough for visiting the town.

???????????

This town is easy-paced and unpretentious, it’s an ideal place to wind down in the evenings after exploring the province.

While staying in the Marche region we visited the commune of San Severino in the Province of Macerata. San Severino is about 50Km southwest from Ancona and about 25km from Macerata.

In San Severino you will see many beautiful buildings including the modern art gallery, The Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Doliolo, The Cloister of San Domenico,  The Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Glorioso,  Church of the Maestà di Parolito and Palazzo Servanzi Confidati which is without a doubt one of the most impressive buildings in San Severino

San Severino is also famous in the Marche area for its many great restaurants.

If you feel like running away from the busy cities, this is a nice solution. This cosy village is a small piece of paradise

My friends at the Edu Lingua School in Castelraimondo where I have attended twice  have now planned to open another school in San Severino.  The school will be in a beautiful palace of the 17th century that will host not only the classrooms but also the rooms for the students.

While we were renting the house in Pievebogliana, we visited the little town of Muccia many times.

muccia

From Wikipedia

Muccia is a municipal in the Province of Macerata in the region of Marche , located about 70 km southwest of Ancona and about 40 km southwest of Macerata and only about 7 km from Camerino.

muccia map 2

In the small central piazza there is an excellent restaurant with a menu specializing in many of the local produce including porcini mushrooms, truffles and game, including Cinghiale (wild boar), venison, partridge, pheasant and woodcock. They are cooked, using recipes from the local area – the food is simple and authentic.

We also met with friends a few times at a little bar, I Giardini.
Muccia is a small, sleepy town with lovely ancient buildings. There are a few hotels and B&B’s in the Muccia area if you ever feel like a peaceful break.

DSCF1826-1 DSCF1825-1

We stayed in the area close by for a month and were never short of things to do. Of course you do need your own transport. We drove to Camerino, Macerata, Castelraimondo, Madelena and other small towns in the area often.

Pievebovigliana – Renting a house in Italy

Since my last post on Pievebovigliana I have been asked –

Where is Pievebovigliana.

stew italy entire card 585

Pievebovigliana is located about 70km southwest of Ancona which is on the Adriatic Coast, and about 40km southwest of Macerata.

Pieve

We visited  Macerata many times, both when we were staying in Pieve and when we were going to school in Castelraimondo.  We took the train from Castelraimondo and drove from Pieve to Macerata.

DSCF1848-1

Pievebovigliana is between the towns of Camerino, Caldarola, Cessapalombo and Fiastra.  It is formed of a number of small hamlets, and lies in the very picturesque valley of the Fornace stream.

DSCF1007

pievebovigliana-centro-storico-02_lib_comune-di-pievebovigliana

DSCF1843-1

There are forests of chestnuts and oak trees in the area around the hamlet called “Isola”, a pinewood at Quartignano and at Boccafornace a Karst spring originating a spectacular lake. The territory has an age-old, still lively traditions of cloth-making on hand-looms, wood carving and honey production.

italy 649

To arrive in Pievebovigliana, we took the train from Roma Termini to Foligno  railway station where we were met by our friend Malcolm who drove us to the house in Pievebovigliana.  It was only a 2 hour train trip from Rome.

DSCF1862-1 DSCF1866-1

On the way from Foligno to the house we stopped at a restaurant in a little village for a prosecco and pizza. Very pleasant.  This is when I was introduced to my favourite pizza. Quattro stagione – 4 seasons

Pizza 2

There are many versions of this compartmentalized pizza, since local ingredients are used.  But, all reflect the ingredients one can find fresh in each of the four seasons.  Spring features artichoke hearts and Fontina cheese. Summer has tomato, basil and mozzarella cheese.  Look for the colours of autumn in mushrooms and red peppers and in winter it is traditionally with onion and potato.
